About this Tool

Microsoft OneDrive is one of IU's cloud storage tools, allowing you to store, share, and sync your files. OneDrive storage is approved for Public or University-Internal data. Everyone at IU has access to OneDrive for storage and sharing, and accounts for students, faculty, and staff offer 5 TB of storage. OneDrive supports hundreds of file types and is available for Windows and Mac as well as for mobile devices.

When you and your students use OneDrive, you can avoid losing work without having to email yourself or use a thumb drive; backups occur automatically. When OneDrive files are shared, users can see changes and comments in real time. This makes OneDrive useful for keeping collaborative class notes, commenting on student work, or facilitating peer review.

Key Features for Teaching and Learning

  • Sync files. If you add, change, or delete a file or folder in the OneDrive folder on your computer, then that file or folder is added, changed, or deleted on the OneDrive website (and vice versa).
  • Avoid losing work. Do your work in the Cloud to avoid losing it; encourage your students to do the same.
  • Access files on multiple devices. OneDrive is available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, which means you can create something on your computer and edit it on your mobile device (or vice versa).
  • Share and collaborate. You can share files and folders with others and view their comments and changes in real time.
