Context
As an instructor, I have learned that many students may have the knowledge of the content inside of them, but struggle with the ability to write out their thoughts in a cohesive manner. I often tell students in class that I want them to answer the question as if they were talking about it over coffee with me. The advanced skill of formal writing assignments can hinder our ability to see they have achieved the learning outcome.
Step-by-Step Implementation
- Give students a list of the unit-level objectives and ask them to take notes and prepare a verbal answer. This should be 2-3 minutes long and shares their knowledge of that objective.
- Students read and prepare ahead of class. They can share their achieved learning objective, and practice speaking in a low-stakes manner in front of their peers.
Effectiveness
Initially, students mention they are nervous but, in the end, they always mention how beneficial it was in preparing them for class and driving home the key points of the class.
